Harlan Christian Youth Center sound installation

Have you heard of Harlan Indiana?  Probably not, but you should.  Harlan is a small rural community of approximately 900.  It is located about ten miles northeast of Fort Wayne.  In April of 1998, a Board of Directors was appointed to create a center for the area youth.  The original building officially opened their doors on March 8, 1999.  Ground was broken for a new addition in September of 1999.  The photos are from the open house in October of 2000 to dedicate the new addition.

Pictured is Bishop Ray Seilhamer (speaking), of the United Brethren in Christ. Behind the Bishop and to the right is my friend, Pastor Steve Smith, of the South Scipio United Brethren Church. Next to him is Rick Hullinger, the Director of HCYC.

Harlan Youth Center ribbon shredding

The pictured "ribbon shredding" was performed by many of the youth who attend events at the youth center. The only school in Harlan is the Harlan Elementary School, with a student body of approximately 550. The membership of the youth center is currently 210, and the monthly attendance is approximately 800.

During the dedication ceremony, Judge Charles Pratt of Allen County Superior Court, Family Relations Division, presented the "Youth Development Award" on behalf of the "Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth" initiative,to the staff of Harlan Christian Youth Center. This was the first of these awards presented in Allen County. As the name implies, this award is designed to recognize people and organizations who are doing outstanding work in youth development in their communities.

This is the large multi-purpose room in the new addition. Beyond being used for indoor sports, this room is equipped with a large screen, projector, and an awesome sound system (even if we do say so ourselves here at PMC). Since this room will be used
Harlan Christian Youth Center multipurpose room
for theatrical presentations, live musical performances, movies, and large meetings, the sound system had to be very adaptable to all those purposes.

In this photo, you can see the double 18" subwoofer sitting on the right at the back of the stage. During live performances this cabinet will be on its side at the front of the stage. The two main speaker cabinets are located at ceiling level in front of the stage to the right and left of the screen. You can also see a small speaker cabinet mounted on the ceiling toward the back of the room. Since this is a very long room, we put this speaker on a delayed line, so it's sound would time align with the sound arriving from the main speakers. This allows volumes to be set lower, yet people can hear throughout the room. Of course, when a live band, or CD's or tapes are pumping through the system. The smaller speakers are really not terribly needed.

Harlan Christian Youth Center lounge

This room, located upstairs in the new addition, is the Jr./Sr. High room. It is a lounge type room for bible study, and fellowship. It is a great room for small meetings and discussion groups.

Other rooms upstairs include a small chapel for prayer meetings; a small classroom for study connection mentors and students to meet in; and a large classroom/conference room which is also used to house Harlan memorabilia.

Another shot of the Jr/Sr High room. It is furnished with a sink, small refrigerator, and microwave; plenty of cabinet storage; lots of tables, chairs, couches, and a fireplace. All the rooms upstairs are equipped with speakers that are controlled and fed from the mixing console in the multi-purpose room downstairs.

Harlan Christian Youth Center resource room

The last of the five rooms upstairs is the Resource Center. It is equipped with study materials, tables for study groups to gather at, and 10 computers with 256k pipeline internet access for the kids to use for their homework and research. The rooms upstairs feature beautiful cabinetry supplied by cabinet makers that are located in the Harlan area. Quality and workmanship were impeccable.

Harlan Christian Youth Center game roomThis is the multi-purpose, and basically only room in the original facility. Other than storage, office, restrooms, and kitchen, this was THE area for all functions at the original 2100 Sq. foot center that had been a machine shop before.

The new addition brought an additional 6900 sq. foot to Harlan Christian Youth Center. The center is staffed by two full time, one part staff member, and a large group of volunteers. An advisory panel made up of community, church, and business leaders, and a youth advisory board made up of kids, guide in designing programming for the youth center.

Some of the programs include a Study Connection program in which the center provides volunteers to be matched up with struggling students identified by the school for tutoring and mentoring. After school programs including live music, video production, and weekly instruction in martial arts by a certified Christian Martial Arts Instructor, are ongoing, and growing.

Peavey 24 channel mixer

Here is the mixing console located in the sound booth in the multi-purpose room of the new addition. CD, Video, Tape, and DVD are all connected to the sound system and operated from within the booth. Different sources can be sent to different rooms upstairs, as well.

Peavey HV front of house speaker cabinetA closer photo of one of the main speakers. We had originally designed a center cluster speaker system for this room, but the projector and screen required us to modify the design. Because of the area of dispersion of the high frequency horns from the main speakers, we added a small cabinet between those two cabinets (to the left of the large speker in photo) to enable people sitting toward the front in the center to be able to hear the high frequencies. This is mainly for meetings where volume levels will be lower.

amplifier rack Peavey CS power amps

The rack loaded with amplifiers for the main speakers. The speaker system is tri-amped. As I recall as I am writing this, the subwoofer is powered with 1200 watts. The mids are powered by 800 watts, and the highs are powered by 500 watts. There is also another power amplifier with up to 1200 watts available for monitors.

floor pocket

Although the system is a PMC design, the installation labor was provided by the staff and volunteers of Harlan Christian Youth Center under the guidance of PMC. How about the workmanship of the installation of this dual floor pocket located on the stage. These pockets not only contain microphone inputs, but they contain 1/4" powered outputs that can be assigned for subs, or to either of two monitor sends.

PMC thanks Harlan Christian Youth Center for choosing us to participate in the design and installation of the sound system for this worthy project.

Our hats off to the Harlan volunteers and the organization for their devotion to the youth, for the wonderful work they have done, and may God bless the work they will yet do.

Oh, did I forget to mention--They became DEBT FREE in February of 1999 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
