Godin started building guitars over twenty years ago in a village in Quebec Canada called La Patrie. The man that started it all is Robert Godin. Robert still owns the company and he continues to design the vast majority of the company's guitars.
Godin guitars are assembled in the Berlin, New Hampshire factory. The necks and bodies are all made in the original location in La Patrie, Quebec. They are also known for their acoustic guitars which include the following brands : Seagull, Simon & Patrick, Norman, LaPatrie and Art & Lutherie.

SDThe SD combines the easy feel of a short scale (24¾") with the added snap of a rock maple neck. The short scale reduces string tension, which provides easy string bending and augments the low frequency response. The compact feel of the neck and the diagonal radius carved into the body produces exceptional balance and comfort. In short, this guitar is fun to play, and lends itself to classic rock and R&B sounds. The SD is available with the Godin Leaftop finish, which applies a highly figured maple veneer to the top. Quilted tops are available with the lightburst finish and flame tops are offered in blue. Maple or rosewood fingerboards are optional in all colors.

DetourThe short-scale (24 ¾”), rock maple, neck provides both easy string bending and a comfortable, compact feel. A block of Silver-Leaf Maple provides a solid anchor point for the bridge and neck with balance provided by light Poplar wings on each side of the body. Maximum neck/body resonance is further assured by the super-tight neck pocket, which is masked prior to finishing to make sure that there is no paint or finish residue left to impede a perfect wood-on-wood connection. Strings pass through a brass plate in the back of the guitar and through the body for maximum sustain. All of this exceptional resonance is captured by two Godin humbucking pickups. Freeway ClassicGodin’s rock maple necks are known throughout the guitar industry for outstanding feel and boundless sustain. The 25 ½” scale neck on the Freeway features Godin’s ergo-cut shape and medium jumbo frets. Neck stability is insured by a double-action truss system capable of adding and removing relief in the neck. The body consists of a center block of silver-leaf maple with light poplar wings. Silver-leaf maple is an excellent tone wood with a weight and density similar to mahogany. The warm tone of the silver-leaf provides a perfect compliment to the rock maple neck. To ensure that we get the most from this potent combination, each neck and body are joined with a perfect wood-to-wood connection—free of paint or glue—that delivers maximum neck/body energy transfer. The sound of the silver-leaf maple comes at a price—it’s heavy! To balance the guitar and achieve a comfortable weight the silver leaf core is flanked with light poplar wings. This ultimately produces a comfortably light guitar with ‘heavy guitar’ resonance. LGP90The hand crafted mahogany neck of the LG sits in a deep pocket in the mahogany body. This crucial connection provides excellent energy transfer between neck and body. Pulling the strings through the body increases resonance even further. In other words, this is one lively guitar. The pickups and bridge are also recessed into the body to achieve a very comfortable position for your right hand.
Inspired by classic, all-mahogany electric guitars, we equipped the LG with two Seymour Duncan SP-90 single coil pickups. The 24¾" scale enhances the LG's bottom end and playability. Blues and Rock players looking for a smooth sounding guitar should check out the LG.

SolidacTwo-Voice The Solidac is the latest Godin model to offer the two-voice concept. It combines the sound of magnetic pickups (electric guitar) with a bridge transducer system for acoustic sounds. This guitar offers players the versatility of a humbucker-single-humbucker pickup configuration along with a transducer-equipped tremolo bridge. All of this sonic power comes in an instrument that sports the same ultra comfortable Mahogany neck found on the LGX with a Silver Leaf Maple body. Individual outputs are provided for the magnetics and the bridge, with the bridge output doubling as a mix out for both signals when used alone. There is an internal preamp voiced to provide excellent acoustic sound when used with any full range system and it produces very good acoustic tone even when plugged into a regular guitar amp. The Solidac represents an opportunity for players on a tighter budget to consider a two-voice concept guitar that retains all of the hand-finished quality that is a standard feature in every Godin instrument. LG SignatureGodin has launched the LG Signature. The LG Signature features a mahogany neck that is generous in girth but retains the comfort of a smaller neck thanks to Godin’s ergocut shaping technique. The use of a 25.5” scale in a mahogany guitar produces a best-of-both-worlds kind of combination. A new 5-way switching configuration and a pair of Seymour Duncan humbuckers helps to make the most of the LG Signature’s considerable potential. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Godin Signature Series guitar if it didn’t boast the stunning good looks of a carved flame maple top. The innovations at work in the nylon string Multiacs are available in the steel string models as well. Outwardly the Steel and Nylon models look much the same. Inside, it's a much different story. The top of the Steel string Multiac incorporates a modern variation on the classic X-brace. The slim necks and shallow bodies of these guitars make them exceptionally comfortable to play. The two-chamber body design resists feedback and the custom voiced preamps make for great sound in performance with minimal effort. Freeway 4ActiveComfort, balance and classic bass sounds are what the Freeway basses are all about. Each rock maple neck is hand-finished and shaped with the Godin Ergocut technique. The convertible bridge provides the option of stringing through the body-adds snap to the sound—or through the back of the bridge—for a mellower tone. The active version of the Freeway basses replaces the maple/poplar body in the passive models with solid mahogany. Godin active electronics can handle everything from a mellow to a clear bright sound that will propel the Freeway through whatever sonic-soup gets in its way. Specs |

Godin is a Canadian company with the head office located in Montreal and they build guitars in four different locations, three in Quebec and one in New Hampshire. For those of you keeping score, that adds up to six factories spread out over about 1000 kilometers. So why not just have one giant guitar factory? Although there are some obvious inconveniences associated with spreading themselves out so much, the up-side is that these smaller operations promote a more intimate working environment which gets everybody more involved and this is reflected in the instruments themselves.
From the beginning the company has been more or less divided between the acoustic side and electric side. The electric side of their business was originally that of a parts supplier to other guitar companies. Godin built their necks and bodies. You might be amazed to find out how many different guitar brands are all being produced in the same handful of factories. We're not telling you this because we want to divulge somebody's secrets but simply to let you know where Godin is coming from. In any case, what started out as some generic replacement necks and bodies soon evolved into a major business producing finished necks and bodies for many established U.S. guitar companies. The great thing about this is the tremendous experience that Godin gained building all of these instruments to their various specifications. The down side is that the sub-contracting business is a pain in the neck, so to speak, but more importantly it does not include the best part of building new guitars and that is: coming up with new designs and coaxing them through the process that begins with a sketch and ends with the music.
